Department of Philosophy

Philosophy grapples with fundamental questions about the nature of reality, knowledge, and how we ought to act. Our courses offer a historically sensitive immersion in these arguments.

The Philosophy major equips students with critical reasoning and analytical problem-solving skills, expressive precision, and the intellectual spaciousness to appreciate and engage rationally with diverse arguments and points of view.

Philosophy students are active in the Philosophy Society, the Philosophy Helpdesk, and organize the PhilCon, India’s first undergraduate Philosophy conference. Ashoka Philosophy graduates will be well prepared for higher studies in philosophy or a career in fields like media, law, business, consulting, publishing, and policy research.

Ashoka Philosophy majors have obtained employment in positions like Research Analyst, Editorial Assistant, and Programme Manager. Ashoka Philosophy majors have also pursued graduate study in Philosophy at universities including Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The Department of Philosophy offers a Philosophy Major, a Minor, and a Concentration, and participates in interdisciplinary majors like Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, Philosophy and Computer Science, and Psychology and Philosophy.
