The Department of Mathematics invites you to a colloquium on September 30, 2025 (Tuesday).
Title: Local fields and their finite extensions
Abstract: We know that the field R of real numbers is a completion of the field Q of rational numbers. About a hundred years ago, it was discovered by Hensel that there are other completions of Q. In fact, there is a completion Q_p for each prime p, and there are no others (Ostrowski). Collectively, fields such as R, Q_p, and their finite extensions are called local fields (of characteristics 0).
The local field R has only two finite extensions and C has only one (Gauss), but every other local field has infinitely many finite extensions. Can we parametrise all finite extensions of other local fields? This question will be the main topic of the Colloquium.
We will show how to parametrise, for a given local field K, all extensions of prime degree and, more generally, all primitive extensions of K. The notions of primitivity and ramification will be defined.
